Vampires Saved My Sister
INT. Interrogation Room - NIGHT
LAUREN sits at a table with her hands clasped in front of her, and her dead eyes set on OFFICER AMELIA AJANE, sitting across from her. One bright green light shines on LAUREN from above.
You have the right to remain silent when questioned, unless you are a Sweglord or involved with them in any way, and then you will be obliged to give all details that Chief Inspector Damian Vile requires, regardless of the circumstances.
AJANE squints at the document in front of her and says under her breath.
Did I read that right?
Sounds about right.
Please remain silent for your own safety until I have finished.
AJANE breathes heavily.
AJANE clears her throat, touches her glasses and twitches her nose. She then glances back at the paper in front of her and continues reading the rights.
Anything you say or do may be used against you in a court of law, unquestionably if you have been exposed to a Sweglord in the past week... okay, that is definitely not standard practice... uhm, just one moment please.
AJANE pushes her chair back, stands up, nervously pats her suit down and heads out the room.
LAUREN sits for 30 minutes in silence, with her hands clasped on the desk in front.
AJANE re-enters the room looking flustered.
Uhm, apparently this is standard practice, certainly wasn't in Pleasantview.
AJANE slides back into her seat, opposite Lauren embarrassed.
Like I said, sounds about right.
Please be silent until I have finished, for your own safety. You have no right to consult an attorney before speaking to the police, in case they support the Sweglords. And you cannot have an attorney present during questioning now or in the future, unless the attorney supports...
(long pause until AJANE says faintly)
His Evil Services.
She reads the rest quickly.
If you decide to answer any questions now, without an attorney present, tough cookies, that was your choice. Live with it if you can.
As you now understand your rights as I have explained them to you, are you willing to answer my questions without an attorney present?
I don't think 'willing' should be part of the question. Do you?
AJANE nods in agreement.

The Bluffs, Windenburg, 2027
"Henry, how delightful!"
Henry stared dumbfounded as the new king shook his hand.
"Uhm, hi," he replied, as soon as he found his voice. Henry's eyes travelled from the king's new tidy haircut down to his regulation royal brown jumper and trousers.
"Alex!" Adrian yelled at the top of her lungs. After Henry's cry of shock when he bumped into Alex, Adrian and Anita had run over from the bushes to see what all the commotion was. "Alex, is that really, you? What are you doing here? Where are your bodyguards? Are you sure you weren't followed by any journalists? Who knows who you've attracted here!"
By now, the rest of Henry's friends had heard Adrian's yelling and gathered around him and the king.
"Yes, yes, Adrian. I was very careful, you know. Said I was going for a long bath and snuck out my bedroom window, instead."
He winked at Henry, who, in return, looked confused. Seeing that Henry hadn't got the reference, the king proceeded by saying, "surely, Henry, you've done your own bit of sneaking today."
"Of course you have. You wouldn't get here with your parents' consent,"
"I haven't been sneaking!" Henry insisted and he folded his arms indignantly. Where's he going with this? thought Henry. Honestly, is it 'get at Henry' day, or something? Is there this new public holiday I know nothing about called, 'tease a Henry?'
Adrian's high pitched cackle from behind Henry shook him out of his thoughts. Henry couldn't be bothered craning his head to look at her.
"Alex, we haven't seen you for weeks, you've only just been crowned, and you waltz in here and annoy Henry - as you do - like nothing has happened. Watchers only know why you are here in the first place."
"Okay," said Alex. "I came here because I was looking for Henry."
"No I'm not annoyed," said Henry, "I just don't like the word, 'sneaking'...wait what?" Henry was so caught up in being offended, that he missed what Alex had just said.
"Why, may I ask?" said the king, ignoring Henry's question for the time being. "I honestly don't get what you have against the word, 'sneaking.' If you ask me, I think it's one of the best words in the dictionary. Actually sounds like what it means, which says, if nothing else, this word is honest, unlike the word, 'a' which is only trying to latch onto other words, so it can feel like it has a purpose. Honestly, I could just say, 'have nice day,' and everyone would know perfectly well what I mean. 'A' is a waste of space."
"What did you just say before?" asked Henry.
"Oh I know why Henry doesn't like the word 'sneaking!'" Adrian shrieked, making Henry tense, but that wasn't entirely to do with her voice, but more about the content she was about to spout.
This time, Henry did look behind him.
"I gather you haven't read the news," Adrian giggled, looking at her phone.
Alex frowned. "Come again?"
"Well," said Adrian, clearly enjoying her discovery, and began reading the news headlines. "'Sweglords, oh sorry, 'Sneaklords' spotted outside Oasis Springs police station.' 'Sneaklord Lauren returns home.' Oh and just one more headline for good measure. 'All charges dropped on Sneaklord Lauren.'"
Everyone was silent for a few minutes.
By the look of deep concern on the new king's face, Henry figured the news of Lauren's freedom had deeply upset him. Then the king spoke.
"I am very sorry you had to hear that, Henry."
"Don't mention it," Henry replied, completely taken aback by the king's sincerity. "Uhm, what were you just saying before?"
Anita raised an eyebrow at Adrian. "I thought Henry was your 'friend'. Is that seriously how you treat a friend?'"
"Anita, you hypocrite!" cried Adrian. "You're the one who wants him to spy on his own family."
The king looked over at Adrian. "Come again?" he said. He was smiling as he usually did, but there was something off about his voice. It didn't match. It felt cold, and Henry began to notice the sky was darkening.
Anita's mouth was open like a codfish.
"Well, I was just thinking... that maybe he could be useful..."
"My Grandma, Oak, was apparently useful too, you know," said the king. "She became a mole in the Goodie Two Shoes for her mother, Talula. The saddest part was her 'usefulness' destroyed the mother-daughter relationship. We don't want that to happen to us, now, do we?"
"No," Henry murmured, but no-one else responded.
"Uhm, what were you just saying before?"
"Oh, yes, Henry," said the king. "I need to talk to you about something. Nothing frightening."
A pathetic laugh escaped Henry's lips at the king's reassuring 'ad on.'
Alex continued, "it's about your grandparents."
"My grandparents?" said Henry. "Uhm, okay."
There was silence as everyone looked at the king, who looked at Henry.
"Yes?" said Henry, "Oh, you want to talk... Now?"
The Grandmaster's Mansion, Forgotten Hollow, 2027
A Few Hours Earlier...
There was a knock on the door of the Grandmaster's mansion, Paris's angry voice echoed through the halls.
“If it’s you Caleb, I’m not interested in joining your motley gang of brutes, and neither are my nieces.”
She opened the door.
"Hi Paris," muttered the young vampire.
"Well," said the Grandmaster, excitement bubbling inside, "Did it work? Did you tell them about Lauren? How she's under my care and is my responsibility?"
Lilith avoided Paris's gaze. "I don't know what to say," she sighed. "I even threatened their necks - I played every threat in the book..."
"What do you mean?" said Paris. "Were the judges not afraid your bite is even worse than your bark?"
"No, they were very afraid in the end. It's just... it took a while for the fear to sink in. I've just... never actually really had to...you know... bi... well, I didn't really feel comfortable... you know.... I mean, I know you don't like hearing this, but what if she really di... "
Paris cut her off.
"Yes," Lilith replied. "She's out and she's coming home. You'll see her tonight."
Paris jumped with joy.
"Oh Lilith, you're amazing. You're the bestest ever. No. You're my favourite person in the world. I love you so much right now."
"I know," said Lilith. If only it were true. Also, "Paris, you're touching my boob."
