"There is someone in the living world who knows about Grim's plans," said Angel.
"And who's that?"
"My aunt," said Angel. "Aunt Siobhan."
"Yes," said Angel. "She could speak with Alex."
"But will he listen to her, being a Paragon and the mother-in-law of a Sweglord?"
"Alex is engaged to her grandson, Henry. I think he will listen to her."
"Engaged?" said Gemma. Her eyes stared off passed Angel. Alex engaged to a Sweglord? Alex engaged to Henry? Alex engaged without me knowing? Now that is interesting.
The Lotus Oasis, Al Simhara, 2031
Madelyn entered The Boss's office. The moment her eyes fell on the boss of Morcucorp, she looked away.
Maybe if I don't see him, he won't see me? She told herself.
"Everything alright?" said Luka, walking down the stairs.
Great! thought Madelyn. Her plan to slip out unnoticed and inform the king, had failed.
The Boss smiled.
"Friends of The King, I assume?"
Madelyn hissed 'look what you've done' to Luka.
The Boss and the two 'intruders' stared at each other, neither knowing what to say.
This really isn't what we had planned, thought Madelyn.
One of his officers entered the room and muttered in The Boss's ear.
The Boss's face darkened and he began cursing at the computer screen.
As for the officer, she smiled smugly at Madelyn and Luka and Madelyn wasn't sure if this was a 'you're so dead' smile or a 'psst, I'm really the Resistance'.
Madelyn put a hand on her hip. This is honestly the most awkward Sh** I've been in since Alex mentioned he loved avocados. Dude! Find your own favourite food. Avocados are mine!
Alex came down the stairs. If Madelyn was completely honest with herself, it was rather a relief to have a distraction, but Madelyn was never honest with herself and, therefore, was rather miffed to see Alex intrude.
"Alex!" said The Boss. "I've been expecting you."
The officer left, but not without giving Alex an acknowledging nod, which did not go unnoticed by Madelyn.
"Really hm?" said Alex, approaching The Boss. "And do I live up to your expectations?"
"Very, you're as annoying as they say," said The Boss, although he was smiling.
"They say? Who says?"
"You know very well who. The Resistance!"
Alex smiled. "Madelyn? Luka? You go and tell the others it's fine to release our captives..." he winked at The Boss, so he knew he was referring to his security guards. "... while Morcubus and I shall have a little chat."
Madelyn and Luka approached the rest of the group, who were lined up, holding onto their captives and pointing their guns up to the ceiling so they could not shoot.
"Uhh, Alex wants you to release the security guards now," said Madelyn.
"You've got to be joking!" barked Caleb. The security guard shivered as in his rage the gun slipped down to her face. "Why does Alex want to release these brutes?"
"I don't know," snapped Madelyn. "But it sounded like it was for a really good reason so we ought to listen."
Then Madelyn's irritation turned to focus on something else.
"KRISTEN! Why are you holding a CAT? You know I'm allergic to them!"
"I just saw it prowling around."
"That's what you always say!"
"Yeah, but it's a cat and you're allergic so I had to pick it up."
Meanwhile, Henry, Adrian, Adelyn, Cas and Victor were on the sand, waiting for orders from Rashida who was at that moment negotiating with the Resistance about helping Alex bring down MorcuCorp. Why did he wish to sabotage his relationship with one of the biggest businesses? Alex didn't like corruption and he certainly didn't like being associated with a business who everyone knew was corrupt. He also could see the possible opportunities for power gain.
Adelyn held her right arm out towards Henry, as if she was about to shoot him with her invisible gun.
"You scared, Sweglord?" she said. Henry didn't respond. He was looking at Adrian who seemed distressed about something.
"Hey, Adrian. You okay?" he asked.
"Yeah yeah, I'm fine, Henry." Besides, it's you that's really not fine. Not around people who wish you were dead. She glanced briefly at Adelyn, then back at the ground. "Can we talk later, Henry?"
Rashida returned to the group.
"The Resistance has agreed to help, on one condition."
"And what's that?" said Adrian.
"We'll get back to you on that."
