The Hellewells' Campus, Granite Falls, 2028
Victor, Henry, Madelyn and Kristen sat huddled in the Hellewell girls’ bedroom, while Evil Geniuses Elliot and Quintin guarded the entrance. The rest of the Evil Geniuses searched the house.
Adrian stomped in.
“Victor,” she shouted.
“Yeah?” replied Victor in a small voice.
“I’ll ask you one more time, where’s your phone?”
Victor shielded his face with his hands in fear.
“I told you, I don’t know!” he whimpered.
“Oh yes you do!” Adrian cried in contempt.
“Oh Adrian he hasn’t got his phone!” groaned another voice. Cas sauntered into the room.
“How do you know? They’re sneaky, Sweglords!” Adrian glared hard at Victor, as if everything about him offended her.
“Because he’d tell you otherwise. This one’s a coward. A ‘scaredy-cat,’ completely useless,” said Cas.
Madelyn's head tilted to the side and she narrowed her eyes.
“Actually, that’s exactly what Lauren would say,” she said.
“It’s true,” said Victor.
“Shut up you two,” snapped Adrian. “Fine,” she said after a long pause. “But you better tell us everything you know, Victor.”
“I said SHUT UP!”
Victor quickly nodded, eyes wide, as if he had sat on a pin.
When Adrian turned her back, Henry was sure he saw Cas flash Victor a tender look; the sort of look he caught Alex giving him sometimes.
Luka barged into the room, flustered and confused.
“Alex wants to see Henry,” he said.
The Hellewells' cheeks lost colour.
“Why? What’s Henry done?” Madelyn bewailed.
“Take me instead,” cried Victor passionately.
“No, it’s fine guys!” Henry murmured, avoiding Adrian’s resentful glare.
“If he must see Henry…” Adrian trailed off, but Henry thought he heard her mutter… “Before any of us.”
