Narwhal Arms Nightclub, Windenburg, 2028
"Alex, why did you bring me to a closed down nightclub?"
"Bring you, Henry? I didn't bring you anywhere. I just called you this morning to ask if you wanted to join me on this wonderful 1st of January afternoon, and you said 'yes.' Remember that phone call I had with you last month?"
"Huh?" said Henry. "Oh, yeah, you said you had the wrong number. Really hope it wasn't your phone you were calling on, Alex, or dad would definitely kill you and ground me for the rest of my life. I hope you haven't forgotten what you are and what I am."
"Yes, yes, Henry, you're a Sweglord, I'm an Evil Genius king. I've been using the Grim Reaper's phone. So you might want to delete that number anyway."
"You know why, Henry, don't you? Everybody knows Grim's a right old rascal - not to be trusted. Best stay away from him, unless you're Luka, which in that case, just watch your back at night in case he comes creeping up on you when you least expect it."
Alex turned around.
"I'm going to tell you something very important, because I thought you ought to know and I absolutely trust you won't tell a soul."
"Uh, okay," said Henry. Watcher knows why Alex keeps trusting me with all this deep stuff. Doesn't he worry that my 'Sneaklord' tendencies might get the better of me?
"Well, Henry," said Alex, "the day after we had that...chat...I talked to aunty and she has made it very clear she's been filtering the news I get each morning. I've had a play around on the computer and figured out the software she has been using. It belongs to a member of the Goodie Two Shoes."
"Oh," said Henry.
"Furthermore," said Alex. "It's all information about you and the Sweglords. I think she's trying to protect me. Rather a shame, don't you think, Henry, since I see her as more of a...liability."
"Hmm," nodded Henry. Why's he telling me all this?
"Do you think I am right to think that?"
"Uh, what?" Henry was taken aback by Alex's directness.
"Do you think I am right to think aunty's a liability? I can't be king, if she won't let me know what's going on with the Sweglords. She must be dispatched. Am I right?"
"Uh...yes, I guess," said Henry. He's really serious about my opinion. Weird.
"Right," said Alex, "there's something else I want to tell you. It's about your family's...unfinished business."
"Oh, yep I'm interested," said Henry. His mouth stretched into a smile. Now I get why Alex wanted to see me. Why didn't he just tell me this in the first place? Then I would have sprinted here and maybe given him a hug and a ki...no I wouldn't. Shut up, Henry, I'm trying to listen to what Alex has to say.
"I met with my dead mother recently. Thanks, by the way, for letting me know she is still here. Lucky for you, she told me what the Sweglord's unfinished business is. You see, Henry, one of the gangs - we don't know which one it was: Either the Renegades or the Goodie Two Shoes, hired the Sweglords to take out every member or x-member or anyone associated with His Evil Services."
"Oh," said Henry. So that's why Adrian is so horrible lately. She's scared out of her mind, since she's related to the infamous His Evil Services member, Talula...but so is, "Alex."
"Oh don't worry about me, Henry, I'll be fine. It's your own family you should worry about. When I want to achieve something, I achieve it. You know that."
"But so do my parents," cried Henry. "I don't want you to die." Henry's hand shot to his mouth. Please say I didn't say those words as passionately as I think I said them.
He avoided Alex's bemused stare. "Umm, Alex, uh...I...um..didn't...uh...sort of..."
"It's okay, Henry," said Alex, with a classic Evil Genius smile on his face. "I won't tell a soul."
